According to the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, the pulpit dates back to the early years of the Hijrah, when a wooden pulpit crafted from tamarisk was introduced for the Prophet after he had initially delivered sermons leaning against a palm tree trunk.
